They are big and powerful enemies, and the Autobots are maintenance workers (In fact, most of their weapons are re-purposed tools) even one 'Con requires the entire small Autobot team to work together just to contain him. While some are still unhappy with the look, the simple style makes animation easier and gave some really stylistic action scenes you can become accustomed to it surprisingly quickly.Īnother distinction is the way the Decepticons are used. A cult classic it has become and surely one of the best feature length animated movies of all time. One of the things that separate this show from its predecessors is the animation style, which is fluid, simplistic and very organic-looking. And if you like it all that much, do yourself a favour and pick up the original 1986 ANIMATED "Transformers the movie".

I have a funny feeling though that most of you reading this review are probably adult children from a bygone era buying for themselves!įinally, if you can pick this dvd set up for under a £10, I would say get it, and the other 3 series too. The 2nd hand originals now sell for small fortunes and the numerous reissue toys don't come a great deal cheaper. A word of warning though, if you are buying this for your kids for Xmas, and they decide they would like the toys to accompany the series, that could get very expensive. We were a very lucky generation where there was so much aimed at children, a bit like kids have it lucky today with all those crazy gadgets that were so futuristic to us. Anyone who grew up in the 80's knows that they were spoilt for choice with what was made available for kids to watch on T.V. I'm pretty sure kids of today, especially boys of course, would love these cartoons. It's fair to say that you'll get more episodes on series 2's disc and possibly more for your money, but this is the 1st series of this iconic cartoon and I think it is the best.

There are quite a few incarnations of the 1st series out there on dvd but considering the price I paid (£5) I think this was a very good buy. There are other pirks to this set including:Īnd in dvd game, a quiz and a hidden easter egg. They are faily well presented and the options are easy to navigate. All 11 episodes from series 1 are here (unless you count the 3 parters as episodes in their own right) on 3 discs. I'm sure many of you will remember watching WACADAY with Timmy Mallet in the holidays when they would show the episodes in short bursts each day. series that first got my interest in the toys. Silly thin gs like seeing a character that had met his demise over a cliff face, would suddenly appear without explanation, fighting in the next scene, where he should in fact be still nursing his wounds at the bottom of a casm. Afterall, who needs a storyline when your 8 years old and your watching robots fighting? There are several mistakes in the animation (not noticable to the casual viewer) in alot of the episodes but these are easily overlooked. That said, the shows creators did a great job of conjuring up imaginative story lines that probably, in some cases, went a little over a small childs head.

Yes it was a 22min advert for the toys and the episodes themselves in each series were written based around the characters that Hasbro (the licensed toy manufacturer, although originally produced by Takara in the late 70's) wished the animaters to showcase.

This is really a nostalgic throwback to the 1980's cartoon series "Transformers", and should be judged as such.
